My nephew Scott, recently laid off from his civil engineering job, joined me for some fun in the sun at Fort Jefferson. What better way for two recently unemployed workers to spend some time but by kayaking (in a kayak that had a hole in the hull and was taking on water -- a lot of work to paddle that thing!), snorkeling and exploring?
See the photos of our adventures.

Hi there,
I wasn't sure where else to post, but I had a few questions for you if that is alright. I am considering different options on places to teach and Alaska is a place that I am really interested in. I think so far I have gathered that you are from the midwest and moved to Alaska. So I was wondering what your experience has been like. What is everyday life like in Sitka, AK. Is the cost of living really high?
If you have a second to shot a message back that would be great!
The rain cloud is neat! Were you teaching Scott a lesson about the dangers of idle time by leaving him in jail?
I was trying to teach Scott the lesson of what could very well happen should he choose to ~stay~ unemployed. That jail is hot, too. No windows. No air. Just you and the rats and scorpions.
Kate: Alaska is great...I love it and Sitka and we plan to move back someday. Yes, the cost of living is high but way worth it if you can swing it. If you're there long enough, you can get the PFD from the state. You need to be patient and flexible, especially regarding not being able to travel where/when you want because of weather and being creative in getting or fixing the things you need. Some people have a hard time with the weather ... it rains a lot ... and thus a lot of cloudy, socked in days. Southeast Alaska is much milder than the interior or around Anchorage. I suggest check out the sitkasentinel.com and getting an online subscription so see the hot issues and see rental apartments cost.
